Dear All, From the 21th of march until the 17th of April I will be staying in Japan to work on a new photo series. In 2009 I started to document the relationship between me and my father and now I would like to document a father and daughter relationship in Japan as well. I am looking for a father who is 70 years old or a bit older, and for a daughter who is 30 years old ( can also be a few years older ).
Concept for the photo series is as follows ( text in Japanese will follow later ): In 2009 I started a photo series that tells the story about the relationship between me and my father. During world war II my father was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in Indonesia. It had a big impact on my upbringing. Portraits of me and my father and stillives have to tell our story. The story of a father and daughter and their complex relationship, marked by the second world war and the path they have walked to get this relationship right. I would like to find a father and daughter about the same age as my father and me. I would like to investigate how a relationship between a father and daughter in Japan has developed simultaniously with the relationship between my father and me. In that sense I would like to research what the differences and simularities are between my relationship with my father and theirs. Has the war also played a role in their life? And how? What is the influence of the Japanese culture on their relationship? Etc. My ultimate goal is to make a book. The Japanese occupation of the then Dutch - Indies is a history that we the Dutch share with Japan. Through a book I can show a large audience what history at the level of four people has brought. Besides the photos, I also would like to show the historical and cultural background behind my story. I think its not going to be a project that will be possible to make in just one month and that I will return to Japan later on to finish it.
If you know someone who would like participate in this series, please contact me by email: meta@metascheltes.com Best regards,
